HTML Character Codes

The following list contains several different forms of HTML codes to display ASCII and other characters on your Web pages.

The complete ASCII character set is shown along with some of the many additional extended characters only available with custom codes.

The most common display issues are caused by direct literal or numerical references to characters from vendor proprietary character repertoires (fonts), such as the Microsoft Windows dagger (†) character. Often the culprit is fancy or typographical quote marks from either the Windows or Macintosh character repertoires (fonts). The entire ASCII range 127 through 159 should be considered invalid here, and should not be used in HTML in raw form. The solution is to reference UNICODE characters instead using one of the methods shown below.

This list is maintained here for quick reference while creating your own web pages.

Note: not all web browsers support all of the characters and codes, so be sure to test your desired HTML codes in several different web browsers before you use them. It is best to use the Friendly Code shown below whenever possible even though it may seem like it will add extra bytes to your HTML code. Some browsers can perform smart character substitution when the Friendly Code is used that is not possible when the numerical display code or the literal character is used.
